About Turbochargers

Turbochargers are air pumps driven by exhaust energy to supply additional air for combustion. Using exhaust gases to drive a centrifugal type pump recovers exhaust energy that would normally be wasted to the atmosphere and instead uses it to enhance the engine operating efficiency.

Turbochargers are widely used on diesel engines to improve their power output while decreasing engine size and displacement. By charging the cylinders at higher than atmospheric pressure – commonly known as boosting – more air can enter the cylinders during the intake stroke.

Charging the cylinders with additional air mass alone does not increase power output. However, the additional air mass does allow for more fuel per combustion cycle, which in turn, increases the amount of combustion pressure produced from each cylinder.
